US Virgin Islands : Travel

December 2, 2010 by Jensey 8 Comments

We’ve been fortunate enough to shoot not one, but two weddings in the US Virgin Islands in the past two years. Since our first trip for a wedding was before my blogging days, I’ve combined my favorite photos from both trips for this blog post. Enjoy! :)

Nate and I at Trunk Bay. :)

St. John was gorgeous.

Nate and I in St. Thomas for Julie and Christopher’s wedding. :)

Obligatory tripod + sunset shot. :)

I thought Florida lizards were bad- Over there, iguanas run the place! These things were as big as our dog! ;)

The St. Thomas airport is my favorite (location wise.) It’s always terrifying to land (it looks like you’re landing in the ocean, with the runway popping up at the last second!), but somehow getting out of the plane and seeing this makes it all ok. :)

Next up: Julie and Christopher’s St. Thomas USVI wedding! <3

Marielys + Anthony = Sophia

November 29, 2010 by Jensey 6 Comments

Marielys Canaan was sweet enough to ask us to photograph her for the next album she’s releasing. Just incase you don’t remember our session for her first album shoot, you can find them here! We took some time during the session to capture her new little family- It doesn’t get much cuter than this!

Sophia is pretty much the luckiest baby in the world to be raised by these two. :)

Mari and Anthony, we love you guys!!

Q&A with the Roots!

November 28, 2010 by Jensey 4 Comments

A few weeks ago on the Root Photography Facebook page, we asked you all to ask us anything. The answers to our favorite questions are as follows:

I guess this being my first year as a photographer, I’d love to know about the “early years.” how you did it at first, what you learned, and what you changed.

Oh, Nick, there should be a whole blog post devoted to this! The most important things we learned were to always bring enough batteries and memory cards (ha!), but the biggest thing we changed was our editing style. It’s common for photographers when they’re first starting out to over-process images. Like, over-the-top saturation bumps, blurs, selective coloring, etc. That’s fine if that’s a photographer’s personal style, but it wasn’t ours. For us, the biggest lesson we learned was to develop a signature “pop” to consistently apply to our photos, and it’s taken us way too long to learn less is more. We’re still learning and evolving our style, but I’m finally happy with our consistent photo processing, and proud of the work it’s taken us to get here.

When will we see more pictures of your trip to Africa? ;-)

Not any time soon, sadly enough! It’s my goal to blog about our trip before next April, but we’ll continue to share more favorites in our Photo of the Week selections!

Dream locations to photograph?

Jensey’s : The Salzkammergut Lake District in Austria (where the opening scene from The Sound of Music was filmed.)

Nathan’s : What she said? Honestly, I don’t have one right now. Anywhere with exciting backdrops and clean air. I’m open to suggestions!

After an all night editing binge, how do you get amped for a shoot?

We get amped for a shoot by not having all-night editing binges. ;)

What has been your favorite place you’ve traveled?

Jensey’s : A big clearing surrounded by mountains that my Dad flew us to outside of Anchorage, Alaska. I dream of having a vow renewal there. :)

Nathan’s : No doubt about it… Kisima Ngeda in Tanzania, Africa. The most serene, remote, and relaxing location I’ve ever been to. (Minus the nearby hyena den, of course.)

Favorite Movies? Top 5 list from each of you!

Jensey’s : Singin’ in the Rain, Ramona and Beezus, Big Fish, Enchanted, and Funny Face.

Nathan’s :  Eternal Sunshine, Lars and the Real Girl, Punch Drunk Love, Gattaca, and Singin’ in the Rain (made me fall in love with Jensey!)

If you weren’t photographers, what would you be?

If we’d kept on the path we were headed before wedding photography found us, Jensey would be an ASL interpreter and Nathan would be a web developer.

What’s your favorite thing about wedding photography?

We both agree that our favorite thing is having a career that allows us to work side-by-side all day, every day. :)

‎If you could shoot any person or event…living/dead/present/future/past…what would it be and why?

Jensey : I would have wanted to photograph the shooting of Singin’ in the Rain, my favorite movie of all time. :)

Nathan : The Last Supper. First thing that popped into my head.

Which do you like better: day weddings or night weddings?

Outside day weddings, hands down. You absolutely cannot beat natural light in its finest. :)

Which Disney character couple would you most like to shoot the wedding of?

Giselle and Robert from Enchanted. :)

Do you have any more questions for us? If there are enough left in the comments, we’ll post another Q+A sometime next month! :)
