As many of you know, Huck had a bit of a misadventure a couple weeks ago when he was attacked by a terrier while we were on a walk. The last time we checked in, our little man was looking something like this…
… Which now looks like this!! Huck is doing so much better. They were able to save his eye and for most of the time he’s awake, he can keep it wide open. Sometimes I look at him and almost forget anything ever happened, until the light hits just right and you see all the blood behind his pupil. :( We have another trip back to the vet this week to find out if he can see out of it or not; our vet says things are looking good!
Huck has gotten very used to his cone. He didn’t fight us when we put it back on, and he’s finally learned to sleep in it. He still seems sore and sleepy all the time, spending most of his days doing this:
I miss my spunky puppy!
Other than some tenderness and his mood being completely off, things are looking up for Mr. Finn! As traumatizing as all of this was, I can’t help but count our blessings:
– Huck was attacked, but thankfully by a 15lb terrier, not a 90lb Doberman.
– Even though we’re having problems contacting the owner of said terrier, Huck’s vet bills are in the hundreds, not the thousands.
– I have the best husband ever who puts eye drops in an uncooperative puppy twice a day without complaint!
– We really have the best dog ever. While I never feel like I take my husband or dog for granted, it’s sometimes good to have that reminder. Sometimes.
– Huck has received so much attention, concern, and love from internet land! All of your Facebook messages, blog comments, phone calls, and get well soon cards have been so completely amazing. Huck even had flowers sent to him from our best friends in Tennessee. I’m so, so thankful for all of you guys! Huck really is our kid, and all of your love has made this whole ordeal that much easier.
I’ll post another update in a few weeks, hopefully with a cone-free Huck Finn! :)
The Richard Family says
Oh my goodness, he looks a million times better!!! I can’t believe the dramatic change already. Fingers crossed he’ll have a full recovery. We love you guys!!
Jensey says
It is looking *so* much better. Fingers crossed for his appointment tomorrow!
Wow, Huck! You are super doggy! Looking great, little man!!! Fingers crossed that it will be a great update at his next vet visit!
So glad to hear he’s OK — and that you guys are too! What an ordeal :/
Thanks, Crystal.
This post made my heart happy! Huck is as adorable as ever!!
Yay! Thank you, Casie!
Such a relief and such a great read! Goooooo Huck!
Yaaaaaay Huck! :)
Huck is so adorable, I am so happy that he got to keep his eye!! That had to be such a relief.
I hope animal control helps you get the owners to pay the vet bill. It is their responsibility.
Yay for having a great hubby like Nate that helps out like he does!
Ace (our dog) and I pray Huck gets his sight completely back in his eye.
Thank you, Tracy. :)
I am so glad to see he is doing better! The first pictures frightened me – I have an eye phobia, apparently it extends to dogs too. I am so glad to see he is close to being back to normal!
Yikes! I’m sorry if I frightened you with the photo- I even only posted the blurred out ones. :( We’re so glad he’s almost back to normal, too!
what a brave little man!! He just has so much attitude in his pictures..I am sure he will be a spunky pup in no time!
Sure hope so! Thanks, Betsy!
He looks much better!!! My heart broke at the first picture the first time I saw him. Huck… you are a HUNK!
Bahahaha! Thanks, Kristen! :)
My heart goes out to you guys and Huck! Our kittie had surgery on labor day and is also rather reluctantly wearing a cone until the staples come out. I’ve gotta say, the first pic is quite scary!! But he’s looking GREAT and I really really hope he’ll be able to see out of his eye! Good luck :)
Thank you so much, Michelle! Hope your kittie gets well soon, too!
Oh, I am so happy I don’t even know what to say! What a brave pup! I am so glad that he is doing so well. Keep it up Huck! :)
Yay!! Thanks, Kendra. :)
So Glad to hear and see he is doing better! Give Huck our love!
Likewise! Thanks, Ashton! :)
Oh his eye looks so good! TEAM HUCK! ;)
Thanks, Becka!!! :)
So glad he’s doing better. What a champ!
Aw, thanks, Garrett. :)
So thankful that your Huck is better….maybe the spunkiness will return when the cone comes off. It might be that he thinks he is supposed to be a calm puppy while the cone is on…..anyway, I am so happy that his recovery seems to be a good one. Hooray for Huck!! Hopefully Huck’s mom and dad will recover from the trauma, too.
Thank you, Anna. I’m pretty sure he has no idea what happened, but it’s gonna take me a *little* longer to feel comfortable walking him again. :(
I have a giant ear-to-ear grin on my face. What a sweetie pup! He looks amazing. Give him a smooch fer me!
Yay! Smooch received! :)
I am sooo happy to hear that Huck is doing better! I know how terrible it is to watch your little dog go through something as horrifying as this was for Huck. Charli got used to her cone (after her eye surgery) and even started to cooperate with the eye drops (which we had to set an alarm throughout the night to put the drops in her sweet little eyes). I had a color-coded chart for all of her medication :). My heart just sank when I heard that something happened to him and I’m thrilled to know that all is looking up for your little boy.
As for the owner of the terrier– please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help.
Hugs! Lindsey and Eric.
Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry to hear about Charli- Is she doing better?? You’re gonna be such a good mom, Lindsey. :)
I just gasped (with joy) so loud at Huck’s “after” picture that Mikenna (our Shih Tzu-Pomeranian) nearly jumped up out of a sound sleep! I’m SO SO SO happy for Huck and you two happy parents! Yay! (I understand that having a mopey puppy is no fun, but at least hes getting the rest his little body needs to heal!) :-D
Aww, thanks Christy!!
Wow that is so great that he is doing so well. The difference from photo to photo is amazing!! What a lucky guys to have such loving parents :)
Thank you, Amanda. :)
Awwww, so glad to see his eye looking almost normal!
Ditto! :)
Oh my goodness! I can’t believe that happened :( I’m glad that he’s healing up quickly! I’m sure he’ll be cone-free in no time!
I sure hope so! :)
I’m so happy that he is doing so much better and his eye could be saved! Fingers crossed for his next appointment. And hopefully you can hunt down the terrOR owner (and that is coming from someone with a jack russell-I won’t deny that they can be little monsters) I hope that person takes some responsibility for their careless dog owning-I’m not saying it couldn’t hapen even if the leash was being held, but the chances would have been MUCH more slim if that person held the leash like the law says.
I hope he takes responsibility, too- He finally returned our calls yesterday, but of course it went to voice mail, so we’re still playing phone tag. :(
I’m so glad to see the update, Beth and I were so upset about your sweet Huck, Beth and Joey have a Pom named Teddy and he had to have surgery today for a problem knee. They are so sensitve and loving puppies. We love Teddy and are soo happy Huck it better. Again thanks for the update.
Oh my goodness, I’ll be praying for Teddy! Thanks for stopping by, Susan. :)
I am so happy he is better. I showed your site to my brother because Huck is so adorable. We were both so upset when he got hurt. It just made us worry about our Mom’s puppy so much. Thank you for the update. It is great to see him doing so well.
Thanks for stopping by, Meghan! We’re so happy he’s doing better.
I’m so glad he is doing better, and will keep his eye!! Poor baby, I know it hurts to see him not being his usual spunky self. :( I feel for Nate having to put the eye drops in….Max hides everytime we get out his drops for ear infections. You’d think we were torchering him, even though he gets extra loves. Thanks for the update, here’s hoping for more positive news soon about his vision!
Huck is much better with eye drops than he was with ear drops a few years ago, thank goodness! He’s still a very squirmy puppy, though. :( Vet appointment tomorrow to see his progress- Fingers crossed!!
Poor little Huck! I’m glad to see he’s doing better Jens. The first photo of him in his cone makes me so sad! I’m glad to hear that he’s adjusting to the cone – when Watson had eye surgery he had to wear one and just hated it and kept walking into things. Give Huck an ear scratch and treat for me!
Lots of love,
Lauren :)
