You should remember Kolby from Tuesday’s post. :)
Kolby and I were the only little sisters that came along to every one of our big brothers’ Boy Scout troop meetings. What could have been an awful, boring experience for a six year old girl, ended up being one of my most wonderful, glowing childhood memories; all of this thanks to Kolby.
The Boy Scout troop included 20 something middle school-aged boys, so it was no shocker that our Moms’ attention quickly moved from us to the boys, ensuring they didn’t, you know, burn down the church.
The one thing Kolby and I immediately learned we shared in common was a vast imagination… That church quickly turned into a child’s dream playground, where we’d run up and down the dark hallways and play hide-and-go seek in a closet of choir robes. We discovered our own Narnia through a hidden staircase which led to the church’s basement: A large pre-school classroom, to be exact.
If there was one thing I loved playing as a child, it was school. What better place to play school than in a vacant pre-school classroom? The huge chalkboards and rows of cubbies were begging for us to get our grubby little paws on ’em!
I can only imagine what that poor pre-school teacher thought the next day when her own writing on the chalkboard was replaced by sloppy 1st-3rd grade girl writing their own lesson plans! I remember filling the chalkboard with doodles and public proclamations of which boy I was going to marry.
Kolby and I remained friends our whole lives, and while we don’t call each other every month or visit as often as I’d like, we’ve managed to stay in touch and remain an important part of each other’s lives. I adore her, and as wonderful as it was to meet her first born, I’m equally as excited to meet her someday grandkids!
Twenty years into our friendship, I got the phone call that my oldest and dearest friend was having a baby and I burst into happy tears. Last December, Kolby gave birth to the ever tiny Kinley. I’m not gonna lie- One of my favorite perks of living in Nashville is being a short road trip away from these two!
You know Kolby’s a great Mom because she’s already mastered “Mom faces.” :)
Those cheeks!!!!!!!! <3
I, on the other hand, am clearly years away from being Mom-ready. I’m so squeamish about holding babies as it is (I’m so big and I’m always afraid of breaking their tiny bones!), so when Kinley was handed to me and immediately started crying, I was ready to as well! The crying fit proceeded to last the next hour or two until she fell asleep.
After she woke up chipper and fresh from her nap, it was easy to see why this Mom-thing is so “in” right now. :)
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there, be you parents to infants or 70 year olds. And a special happy Mother’s Day to my Kolby, who is celebrating her first ever on Sunday. Because in her whole life, she’ll only have one first! Kolby Cheese, I love you to the moon and back. I hope Kinley’s a good gift shopper. ;)

If you cry that much, you are ready to be a mom. Everything about being a parent is emotional. You and Nate are so down to earth and level headed, you will make great parents some day.
That last pic should make Nate worry :-).
BTW, we found out Tuesday #4 is going to be a GIRL!
Talk about scary….

So, so excited to someday be a Mommy!
FINALLY! A girl! So happy for you guys, Chris… Give my love to the Mrs.! :)
Awwww…. how incredibly sweet!
Happy First Mother’s Day Kolby!!!!
Those are my girls! :)
Jensey, you need to put up some of the pictures y’all took a few years ago in the church basement!
I know, I know! They’ll resurface one of these days. :)
Kinley is so beautiful, such lovely moments between her and her Mommy.
Oh Jensey, those pictures of you with the baby are just precious, especially that last one. You and Nate will make great parents someday, I can’t wait for the wagon pictures, LOL.
Aww, thanks so much, Tracy! :)
WOW!!! What a sweet post!! My heart is just a big puddle of happiness right now! Oh the good ole days of running around at the church! Such fun memories. I treasure those times. What a blessing to still have you in my life! Let’s get together again soon. And I agree with Tracy…yall will be super amazing parents one day. You better get on it so we can start working on this arranged marriage thing (that is if you have a boy :) )
Yesyesyes, I hope we see each other soon! Nate and I still have a few kid-less years ahead of us… We may have to pass on Kinley and call dibs on arranged marriages for baby Nordine #3 and #4. ;)
Jensey,
What a heartwarming post! These pictures are absolutely beautiful and they REALLY make me want a Root family session. Please move back to Florida so we can make that happen :) I didn’t think it could be possible, but your family/children portraits are equally as stunning as your wedding photograpy.
You and Nate will be INCREDIBLE parents one day. How could you not be? You two share a one-of-a-kind love that will only be made bigger and better with the addition of a little Root. Your future child(ren) will be so blessed to grow up in a home with that much love and joy in it. Four years after my own wedding, I still check the Root blog on a daily basis, and I look forward to someday in the future seeing pictures of your own beautiful little one(s)!
Brooke, thank you so much for the sweet comment! It makes my heart so happy to know you still check in daily!
I cannot wait to be a someday-mommy! And silly, we can totally schedule a family shoot with your adorable twins- We’ll be down to Central Florida at least 7 more times this year alone for weddings and always schedule shoots around them. We’re currently booking sessions for October, so email us if you’re interested! :)
hahahahahahahaha! of course i am loving the last 2 the most. Classic. You got acclimated pretty fast though ;)
Baaaaaaaaahahahaha, I thought you would! ;)
I LOVE all of these! They are so cute! :)
Thanks, Lydia! :)
Beautiful post! Oh, yeah….you will make a wonderful mother one day. And it is obvious that Nate will make a great Dad. You two have so much fun and everyone can see the joy that radiates from both of you.
I had to laugh at your escapades at the church during Boy Scouts. I work at my church and Wed. mornings after Tues. night scouts is always interesting…. I know all the younger siblings have been having some fun. The teachers in the classrooms have to be consoled after that fun…..But, what great memories for you and Kolby.
LOVED this!!
Thanks for the sweet comment, Anna! I have no doubts Nate was made to be the perfect Dad, and I’ll do just fine following his lead. :)
That is so funny that you work the morning after Boy Scout meetings!!! We had SO much fun, but looking back, I feel awful for those poor teachers! I just remember erasing their chalkboards and making up lessons, going through their drawers, etc. My Mom would have KILLED me had she have known 1/10th of the shenanigans we were getting into! Well… Give my best to those teachers, and let them know in 20 years, those kids will feel awful! :)
